Your Trusted Knitwear Manufacturer Partner

At Algo Bert Fashion, we specialize in custom knitwear manufacturer for independent brands, fashion startups, and established labels looking for a reliable production partner in China.

Knitwear manufacturing is fundamentally different from woven garment production. It requires specialist machinery, yarn knowledge, and technical expertise that most garment factories simply don’t have. Our knitwear production team works exclusively with knit construction — using flat knitting machines, circular knitting machines, and hand-linking techniques to produce knitwear that meets the quality, drape, and finish your brand demands.

Whether you have a complete tech pack or just a reference sweater, our team will guide you through every step — from yarn selection and gauge specification to finished knitwear delivered to your door.

Knitwear Manufacturing — Why It’s Different

Most garment factories produce woven clothing. Knitwear is a completely different discipline — and it requires a completely different production setup. Here’s what makes knitwear manufacturing unique:

🧶

Yarn — Not Fabric

Woven garments start with fabric. Knitwear starts with yarn. The yarn weight, fibre content, twist, and ply all directly determine the final hand-feel, drape, weight, and appearance of your finished garment. Choosing the wrong yarn means no amount of good construction will fix the result.

⚙️

Specialist Machinery

Knitwear is produced on flat knitting machines or circular knitting machines — not sewing machines. The gauge of the machine (needles per inch) determines how fine or chunky the knit structure is. We operate machines across multiple gauges to produce everything from fine 12-gauge jersey to chunky 3-gauge cable knits.

🔢

Gauge Specification

Gauge is one of the most important specifications in knitwear. It determines the density, weight, and texture of the knit. We help you identify the right gauge for your design during the consultation stage — before sampling begins.

🔗

Linking & Finishing

Knitwear panels are joined using a hand-linking or machine-linking process — not standard sewing. Linking requires specialist skill and significantly affects the quality of the finished seam. Poor linking produces visible, uncomfortable seams. Our linking team produces clean, flat, invisible joins that meet premium knitwear standards.

🧼

Washing & Finishing

All knitwear goes through a specialist washing and finishing process after construction — relaxing the yarn, evening the stitch tension, and producing the final hand-feel. This process is as important as the knitting itself. We control wash temperature, agitation, and drying method to produce a consistent finish across every piece in your production run.

“This is why we don’t mix knitwear production with our woven garment production. Knitwear is a specialist discipline — and we treat it as one.”

Understanding Knitwear Gauge — A Simple Guide

Gauge is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. It determines how fine or chunky your knitwear looks and feels. Choosing the right gauge for your design is one of the most important decisions in knitwear development.

How Custom Knitwear Production Works

Note: Knitwear sampling takes longer than woven garment sampling. Yarn must be sourced and a knit swatch approved before the full sample is produced. We always send a knit swatch for hand-feel and colour approval before proceeding to the full sample.

Custom Knitwear Manufacturer FAQ

Absolutely. Knitwear tech packs are different from woven garment tech packs — they need to specify yarn composition, yarn weight, gauge, stitch structure, linking method, and finishing treatment in addition to standard measurements and construction notes. Our knitwear technical team will help you develop a complete knitwear specification from your sketches, reference garments, or mood board.

Our standard MOQ is 50 pieces per style, per colour. For sample development, we first produce a knit swatch (1 piece) for hand-feel and colour approval, then proceed to a full garment sample. We strongly recommend approving both the swatch and the full sample before committing to bulk production.

Knitwear sampling involves more stages than woven garment sampling. Before a full sample can be produced, the yarn must be sourced, a knit swatch must be produced to confirm gauge, hand-feel, and colour, and the swatch must be approved by you. Only then does full sample production begin. This process ensures the final sample matches your expectations — but it adds time compared to woven garment sampling. Our typical knitwear sample timeline is 14–21 working days from yarn approval.

Gauge refers to the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine — it determines how fine or chunky the knit fabric looks and feels. As a general guide: 3–5 gauge produces chunky cable knits and oversized sweaters; 5–7 gauge produces classic mid-weight sweaters and cardigans; 7–10 gauge produces ribbed tops and fine jerseys; 12–16 gauge produces lightweight fine knit basics. If you’re not sure which gauge is right for your design, send us a reference image or sample garment and we’ll specify it for you.

We work with cotton and cotton blends, wool and merino wool blends, cashmere and cashmere blends, mohair and mohair blends, acrylic and acrylic blends, viscose and modal, and a range of recycled and sustainable certified yarns including recycled cashmere, recycled polyester, organic cotton, bamboo, and TENCEL. We also work with novelty yarns including boucle, chenille, lurex (metallic), and sequin-integrated yarns for statement pieces.

Yes. We produce Fair Isle (stranded colour work), intarsia (block colour panels), and jacquard knit patterns using specialist flat bed knitting machines. Multi-colour knitwear requires more complex programming and production management — and typically adds time to the sampling and production process. Please share your pattern reference at the briefing stage so we can assess complexity and provide an accurate timeline.

Yes. Fully fashioned knitwear is produced by knitting each panel to shape on a flat bed machine — rather than cutting panels from a knitted tube. This produces a more precise fit, less fabric waste, and cleaner linking seams. Fully fashioned construction is standard for premium knitwear and is the construction method we recommend for tailored knit silhouettes.

Yes. We source certified sustainable yarns including GOTS-certified organic cotton, GRS-certified recycled cashmere, RWS-certified responsible wool, and FSC-certified TENCEL. We can provide fibre composition certificates, origin documentation, and third-party certifications to support your brand’s sustainability claims and labelling requirements.

Absolutely. We offer full private label and branding services for knitwear — including woven labels, care and composition labels, custom hangtags, poly bags, and branded boxes. Care label composition must be accurate for knitwear — we verify fibre content and provide correct BS EN ISO wash symbols for UK market requirements.

Knitwear QC involves more checkpoints than woven garment production. First, yarn intake — visual and tactile yarn quality check, colour consistency verification against approved standard. Second, knit swatch — gauge check, hand-feel assessment, colour approval. Third, during knitting — stitch tension monitoring, pattern accuracy check, panel dimension verification. Fourth, linking quality — seam flatness, stitch consistency, join visibility. Fifth, washing and finishing — shrinkage measurement, hand-feel consistency, colour fastness after washing. Sixth, final QC — full measurement check, visual inspection, pill assessment, seam strength test. Photos and reports are sent to you at each stage.

Yes. We ship to the UK, EU, USA, Australia, Canada, and worldwide. Both sea freight and air freight options are available. We offer DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) shipping to UK addresses. For knitwear, we recommend sea freight planning due to the longer production timeline — particularly for autumn/winter collections where on-time delivery is season-critical.

Yes. Send us the garment and we will analyse the yarn composition, gauge, stitch structure, and construction method before developing a matched specification. For accurate yarn matching, we may request the garment is sent to our Guangzhou studio. We can also modify details such as colour, silhouette, gauge, or yarn type based on your preferences.

Knitwear sample costs are typically higher than woven garment samples due to yarn sourcing, machine programming, and the additional linking and finishing process. A basic ribbed knit top sample typically ranges from £60 to £120. A complex cable knit sweater or multi-colour jacquard sample will range from £100 to £220. A knit swatch (pre-sample) is charged separately at approximately £20–£40. Sample fees are often credited toward your first bulk order.

Yes. We produce matching knit co-ord sets — typically a knit crop top or jumper paired with a matching ribbed skirt, knit trousers, or knit shorts. All pieces in a co-ord set are produced in the same yarn batch, on the same gauge machine, with the same finishing treatment — ensuring perfect colour and texture consistency across the complete set.
